Panama has partially cut off internet and mobile phone services in its western Bocas del Toro province following weeks of anti-government protests that turned violent this week. The move comes under a newly declared state of emergency.
President Jose Raul Mulino declared the emergency on Friday, suspending freedom of movement and assembly in the region. This decision follows growing unrest that has damaged businesses, the local airport, and public offices. The unrest began almost two months ago over controversial pension reforms.
According to Panama’s National Authority for Public Services, mobile phone and residential internet access in Bocas del Toro will remain suspended until June 25. However, internet access will still be available for healthcare, businesses, and government operations.
The protests, led initially by banana workers striking against US-based Chiquita over pension changes, escalated sharply on Thursday. Protesters reportedly looted stores and set part of a stadium on fire in Changuinola, with police officers trapped inside. The violence has resulted in one death, over 100 arrests, and several injuries, including 13 police officers.
Although banana growers’ unions called off their strike last week to reverse mass layoffs, other protest groups have continued to block roads and demand action. Tensions have also risen due to a recent agreement between President Mulino and US President Donald Trump that allows American troops to be stationed along the Panama Canal.
In response to the unrest, the US Embassy in Panama has issued a travel ban for American government staff to the Bocas del Toro region “until further notice,” highlighting growing concerns over safety in the area.
