Pakistan has officially assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of July 2025. The Foreign Office described the development as a great responsibility, which Pakistan is undertaking with purpose, humility, and strong commitment to global peace efforts.
In its official statement, Pakistan reaffirmed that its leadership at the Council will remain rooted in the principles of the UN Charter, respect for international law, and dedication to multilateralism. The country aims to bring a fair, balanced, and principled approach shaped by its foreign policy and experience in peacekeeping.
While preparing the Security Council’s Programme of Work for July, Pakistan adopted a transparent and consultative approach. It acknowledged the complex security challenges facing regions like the Middle East, South Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The Foreign Office emphasized the need for the Security Council to be more effective and responsive to global crises.
During its presidency, Pakistan plans to hold two major high-level events. On July 22, an open debate will focus on promoting peace through multilateralism and peaceful conflict resolution. On July 24, a special briefing will explore cooperation between the UN and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar will chair both signature events, along with a quarterly open debate on the Question of Palestine scheduled for July 23. These sessions aim to encourage dialogue and unity among member states while addressing pressing international concerns.
Pakistan expressed its desire to work closely with all Council members and to serve as a bridge between the Security Council and the broader UN membership. The country hopes to promote inclusive dialogue and united global action in the pursuit of international peace and security.
